About Ameya-Yokocho Shopping Streets

A busy shopping street area stretching between Okachimachi and Ueno Stations, including under the train tracks. The two streets - Ameyoko and Uechun - have distinct atmospheres, and offer hundreds of various stores to explore.

Historically a district for candy and sweet stores, the area became a black market following WWII.

Ameyoko houses over 180 shops ranging from fresh produce to clothing and accessories. It has a bustling, brash hawker atmosphere.

Uechun, or Ueno Nakadori Avenue as it is also known, is a quieter, more local shopping street. The stores skew more towards local necessities, although it also has a number of clothing and shoe stores, along with second-hand and antique shops.
