Miraikan, located in the Odaiba district of Tokyo, is a seven-story structure symbolizing Japan’s dedication to science. It was established by the Japan Science and Technology Agency to facilitate public engagement with science. Miraikan features exhibits on emerging technologies, robotics, and space exploration.

The Geo-Cosmos exhibit is an awe-inspiring spherical display showing real-time global images from satellites, including weather patterns and ocean temperatures. The museum also hosts sections dedicated to different scientific topics, such as the rock core from the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary and demonstrations of Asimo, the humanoid robot. There’s also a model maglev train showcasing transportation advancements.

Miraikan’s educational programs, workshops, and lectures aim to inspire visitors. The museum also offers special exhibitions that combine science with art.

Miraikan hosted the World Science Centre Summit in 2017, affirming its role in international scientific dialogue. The leadership includes former director and astronaut Mamoru Mohri, with current director Chieko Asakawa.

Besides the exhibits, Miraikan has a dome theater, a conference room, and general-use facilities like the Miraikan Hall and Innovation Hall. There’s also a cafe and a shop.

Miraikan’s outreach includes publications and the training of science communicators, maintaining its role in public science engagement.
