Sunshine Aquarium, a distinctive rooftop marine sanctuary in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district, provides an immersive experience with a broad range of aquatic life. Located atop Sunshine City, this entertainment-filled complex combines education with visitor engagement, plunging guests into the marine environment.

About Sunshine Aquarium

Opened in October 1978, Sunshine Aquarium, formerly known as Sunshine International Aquarium, reopened in 2011 following extensive renovations. As Japan’s inaugural rooftop aquarium, it creatively utilizes space to showcase a diverse array of marine and freshwater species, from the intriguing electric eels and wolf fish to the delicate clione. The Sunshine Lagoon, which can hold 240 tons of water, exemplifies the aquarium’s dedication to creating authentic habitats.

The Marine Garden, refreshed on July 12, 2017, features attractions like the Sky Penguin and Otter’s Waterside. Interactive experiences include fish feedings and sea lion shows, while the serene Kurage Kukan, unveiled in 2020, is dedicated to jellyfish. Historical highlights include the 1980s popularity of sea otters and axolotls, boosted by a TBS television show.

Sunshine Aquarium offers educational programs and has been recognized for its conservation efforts. After closing, the venue hosts events, emphasizing its commitment to marine conservation and education.

The aquarium is a popular destination, not just for its exhibits but also for conservation involvement. The less-traveled parts of the Marine Garden, such as the Sky Path, provide unique perspectives on the inhabitants. The Sunshine Aqua Ring, where sea lions and penguins glide against the cityscape, is a striking symbol of the balance between urban life and the natural world.
