The Miyajima Ropeway provides a journey to the sacred Mount Misen’s scenic summit. Established in 1959, this aerial lift line offers views of the Seto Inland Sea and Miyajima Island’s forests. It allows easy access to the mountain’s religious sites and showcases its natural beauty.

About Miyajima Ropeway

The Miyajima Ropeway elevates visitors to the Shishi-iwa Observatory near Mount Misen’s highest peak, enhancing the island’s exploration. The system, made up of 8-person gondolas and 30-person aerial tramway cars, reaches 500 meters above sea level. Starting at Momijidani Park’s entrance, guests can take a shuttle or walk to the base station, then enjoy a 15-minute ride to the observatory.

Mount Misen has long been significant in Buddhism, with important structures like the Misen Hondo Hall and Reikado Hall at its top. The latter has an eternal flame that was lit by Kobo Daishi (Kukai), a key figure in Shingon Buddhism. This flame is symbolically linked to the Flame of Peace in Hiroshima Atomic Peace Park.

The ropeway opened in 1959 and was updated in 2003 for passenger safety and comfort. It offers views of the island’s seasons and while the ropeway takes visitors close to the summit, hiking trails offer further exploration, with Daisho-in Course being a favorite.

Operational closures for maintenance or weather can occur, necessitating descent by foot, which takes about an hour. Travelers should check for updates before their visit.

The Miyajima Ropeway enhances access to Mount Misen’s sites and preserves the island’s beauty. With panoramic views and sacred mountaintop sites, it’s part of the Miyajima experience.
